Argon is a natural inert gas that is the most abundant in the atmosphere and most frequently used commercially. It is odourless, colourless, tasteless, and non-toxic in both liquid and gas forms. It is predominately used as a packaging gas that displaces oxygen in foods to inhibit the growth of bacteria which cause food spoilage, and to reduce the speed of oxidation.

Common Uses

Used in canned products and in winemaking. The wine barrels are topped off with argon to displace the oxygen to avoid the aerial oxidation of the ethanol to vinegar as it is maturing.
