Natural resin polymer derived from the bark of trees from the genus Styrax from Southeast Asia. Benzoic acid, C7H6O2 (or C6H5COOH), is a colorless crystalline solid, derived from gum benzoin. This weak acid and its salts are used as a food preservative by inhibiting the growth of mould, yeasts and some bacteria, and also as flavour enhancers and aromatic essences.

Formerly used as preservative in fats. At present only used as part of many flavours and essences. Found in many different products, but mainly in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations (perfumes, make-up). Acceptable daily intake (ADI) : None determined. Side effects: None known, but it often contains benzoic acid (E210). Can be used by all religious groups, vegans and vegetarians.

Common Uses

As a preservative in acidic food and beverages like fruit juice (citric acid), sparkling drinks (carbon dioxide), soft drinks (phosphoric acid), and pickles (vinegar) and other acidified food. Other uses are in aromatized alcoholing beverages (beer, wine, low alcoholic drinks), candied fruit, cereals and startch based foods (rice pudding, tapioca), chewing gum, cocoa based spreads, concentrates for fruit juice and nectar, jams, snack foods, soups and broths, and seasonings to name just a few.
