Benzylated hydrocarbons consists of three subtypes: Benzyl alcohol, benzyl acetate, and benzyl benzoate.

Benzyl alcohol is an organic compound that is produced by the hydrolysis of benzyl chloride using sodium hydroxide. It is a colourless liquid with a mild pleasant aroma that is used as a solvent in food due to it low polarity, low toxicity, and low vapor pressure.

Benzyl acetate is an organic compound that is produced by the condensation of benzyl alcohol and acetic acid. It produces a colourless liquid that is used as an artificial flavour in food as it imparts a pear or apple flavour.

Benzyl benzoate is the ester of benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. It produces a colourless liquid that is used as an artificial flavour in food.

Acceptable Daily intake: Up to 5 mg/kg body weight. No side effects known when used in foods. Skin problems may occur when used in cosmetics.

Common Uses

Used in foods as an artificial flavour, and solvent.
